I mean, it looks like different areas are on different elevations

How would u do that? Mousse, gel, spray?

And how do u spike the back? I mean, how do u differentiate the long strands from the short strands to be able to spike them?

Hair products, such as hair paste, and to spike it you use your fingers lol.

lotss and lots of layers

make it longer in the front and shorter in the back

you could gel up the back, to make it spikey

and i'd go with mouse in the front and just kind of shag it

well the short hair in the back can stand up easier because they weigh less. some hair wax or Bed Head Manipulator.

the manipulator is sticky and makes my hair feel dirty but it will give that look. now a days I use this Spray hair wax that gives a similar look but feels cleaner.

go down the hair product section in the drug store or in a hair salon and look at the pictures on the box. Or ask the person who cuts your hair what they would use.

the long hairs will fall forward and you hair will work it's self out.

Oh and I have long straight bangs in the front and I suggest if you hair will lay flat don't but product in it because it's touching you face all day and you don't want any skin problems.
